The primary focus of an EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system.

Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response team that operates under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform lifesaving interventions with the basic life support equipment typically found on an ambulance.

Additionally, Emergency Medical Technicians are called upon to assist Advanced EMTs and Paramedics with ALS procedures.
